Lameness Exams

Our doctors offer comprehensive lameness exams, pre-purchase exams and shoeing evaluations for the performance horse. Gait assessment by digital video is available for indicated cases. Lameness work ups may include using local and intra-articular anesthesia, ultrasound and radiography. We offer many treatment options, including specific joint therapy and acupuncture. We can help diagnose and treat difficult laminitis cases using venogram radiography and corrective glue-on shoes.

Caudal heel pain (Navicular disease)

Several different problems can lead to pain and lameness in the navicular/caudal heel area, including inflammation and injury of the supporting ligaments, problems in the flexor surface of the bone or flexor tendon itself in that area, and/or problems within the navicular bone itself (more on the specifics later). These problems are more common in the performance horse, and in general are the most common cause of "chronic" forelimb lameness in the horse.

Caudal heel pain has been diagnosed in most breeds of horses, but there does appear to be a breed predisposition, with Quarter Horses, Thoroughbreds, and warmbloods being diagnosed with the syndrome more frequently than others. Affected horses tend to be between the ages of seven and 14. Other common predisposing factors are conformation abnormalities of the hoof, including a broken forward or backward hoof axis, underrun heels, sheared heels, contracted heels, mismatched hoof angles, and disproportionally small feet.

Laminitis

Every day veterinarians across the country see hundreds of cases of laminitis, a painful disease that affects the feet of horses.  Laminitis results from the disrupted of blood flow to the sensitive and insensitive laminae within the foot, which secure the coffin bone to the hoof wall.  While the exact mechanism by which the feet are damaged remains a mystert, certain precipitating events can produce laminitis.  Although lamiitis occurs in the feet, the underlying cause is often a disturbance elsewhere in the horse's body.

Acupuncture
Traditional thought on acupuncture says there are 365 points where the energy flows, and the western view states that these meridians are located where nerves and blood vessels cluster. The treatment stimulates the release of neurotransmitters such as endorphins and cortisol an anti-inflammatory steroid.

Today veterinary acupuncturists use solid, hypodermic, and bleeding needles in specific spots to cure aches and pains and maladies like sore muscles and breathing problems. They also use electricity, heat massage, and low powered lasers to activate acupuncture points. If the energy is blocked in one then other meridians are backed up too. The acupuncture treatment releases the obstruction and energy can flow to the organs again.

Among horses vertebral disorders and injuries of the sacroiliac are common problems treated with acupuncture. It has been used for almost 3000 years by veterinarians in China to treat many ailments including founder and colic. Other ailments common to large animals that are commonly treated with acupuncture are nervous system problems like facial nerve paralysis, skin problems like allergic dermatitis, respiratory aliments like heaves, and some reproductive diseases. This method can also be used to treat sports injuries. If your horse is involved in racing or jumping for instance then acupuncture can keep it in better shape.
